I finally had some warm weather in Arizona and by noon I was sweating.
From Holbrook I cut southwest through mountains to Payson and finally Phoenix. I had planned to be in Phoenix around noon where I would see the Margenau family but had a real adventure instead.
30 miles before Payson I saw a sign for the "historic" Young Highway. I pulled over, checked the map on my phone and it looked to me like the Young Highway paralleled the current road I was on and rejoined it 10 miles. So I took down the Young Highway but after about 5 miles the pavement turned to dirt. I continued down the dirt but after another 5 miles of dirt and going east instead of west I started to lose my confidence.
I saw several turns to the right and my GPS kept telling me to take them so I decided to try one but look at the map again before I did. As I was slowing down and looking up the side road on my right I stalled and the motorcycle fell over before I could get a foot down. With my new 600 lb. motorcycle on the ground I kicked the dirt, bit my lip and weighed my options.
... More to continue ...
